The Sumatran Orangutan is classified as Critically Endangered by IUCN, indicating that it has an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild in the near future. Of the remaining 6,624 Sumatran Orangutans left in the wild, 6,074 live in and around the Gunung Leuser National Park in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

Here, Rainforest Rescue is working with the Medan-based Orangutan Information Centre to help conserve the habitat of the Sumatran Orangutans by supporting the local people to rehabilitate illegally cleared rainforest and protect the park from further encroachment. The project involves nursery care, planting and maintaining new trees, and patrolling the forest to protect it.

The Orangutan Adventure Trek offers the chance of a lifetime to view Orangutans close up, along with other iconic - and threatened - Sumatran wildlife. Discover the rainforest habitat of the Sumatran Elephant, Rhinoceros and Tiger. Ride the rivers by canoe and tube. Connect with the locals, visiting traditional villages and Sumatran school kids. All accompanied by expert guides who can help to fully alert you to the unique sights and sounds of Sumatra's incredible rainforest.

Importantly, you can witness first-hand the impacts of humans on the rainforest you've explored, including the devastation of rubber and palm oil plantations. And more importantly, you can see what Rainforest Rescue are achieving in the fight to save vital habitat for the Sumatran Orangutan and thousands of other rainforest species. You can even help the rehabilitation efforts yourself, by planting rainforest trees while you are there!
