Primary School teachers and students nationally are being urged to Score Points for the Environment during Keep Australia Beautiful Week, which runs from Monday 25 to Sunday 31 August 2008.

You could even win a visit from celebrity gardener Don Burke to help bring your design to life!

You will not only be helping the environment, but you will also have the chance to win a range of great prizes for your class.

By participating in the ‘Score Points for the Environment’ classroom challenge, students will get involved in a range of environmentally positive activities that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect our valuable natural resources. Each activity earns points toward the 100 point goal.

Example activities include running a MobileMuster at school to recycle old or broken mobile phones, refilling or recycling empty printer cartridges through your local Cartridge World store, holding a zero waste lunch day or replacing standard light globes with GE energy-efficient globes to improve your classroom’s energy efficiency – to name a few.

Once the challenge has been completed, your class will receive a Congratulations Certificate from Keep Australia Beautiful and its partners.

Plus, by participating in the ‘Design a Sustainable Garden’ competition – one of the challenge activities that will earn you points, your class has the chance to win one of four $500 book packs, water conservation tools and $1000 worth of native plants.

Get your FREE classroom Resource Kit Classes registered with Scholastic Book Clubs will be mailed a classroom Resource Kit in July. This includes a range of FREE resources to help teach students the environmental benefits of each activity.

A large classroom Tracking Poster is also included so that students can fill it in as they complete each of the challenge activities.

Any schools that are not currently registered with Scholastic Book Clubs can phone 1800 021 233 to receive a FREE kit. Individuals that get involved with the Score Points for the Environment challenge will also have the chance to win a $10,000 Modern Solar make-over for their home so why not get involved at home, at work and at school this year.
