For the first time in 2008, Australia’s leading young environmentalists aged 15 to 25 can apply for the Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Award, which will be presented personally by Federal Environment Minister, the Hon. Peter Garrett MP, at this year’s Banksia Awards Gala Dinner in July.

The Banksia Awards, offering15 award categories that reflect the major environmental issues facing Australia today, including climate change, water preservation and eco-innovation are now open to applicants.

Graz van Egmond, executive director, Banksia Environmental Foundation, said the new Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Award was a fitting way to celebrate the Banksia Awards’ 20th anniversary.

“The Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Award is a welcome addition to the Banksia Awards program on its 20th anniversary celebration,” said Ms van Egmond.

“Since the Banksia Awards began in 1989 we have grown from five award categories to 15 in 2008. To have progressed so far in our aim of achieving a sustainable Australia, promoting environmental best practice and educating the community is a fantastic feat.”
Businesses, individuals and groups to have made outstanding contributions to the environment in the past two years are called upon to submit their entries.

Category award nominees and finalists undergo a rigorous judging process by an independent panel of environmental experts. Entry forms and guidelines are available from www.banksiafdn.com

Following the success of the inaugural People’s Choice Award at the 2007 Banksia Awards, the public will once again have the opportunity to nominate their favourite environmental efforts, chosen from a list of 10 finalists from the category awards. Public voting begins online on 5 June 2008, via the Banksia Foundation website – www.banksiafdn.com

     

20 Years of Inspiration – 2008 is the Banksia Awards’ 20th Anniversary

     

The Banksia Awards are the Banksia Environmental Foundation’s annual event recognising outstanding environmental achievements by businesses, governments and individuals across Australia

The Banksia Awards celebrate its 20th Anniversary in 2008. The Banksia Environmental Awards commenced in 1989 when a group of Australians from diverse backgrounds assembled to support and recognise members of the community for their positive and pro-active contribution to the environment

For the first time in 2008, the Banksia Awards will include the Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Award. The new award recognises outstanding
environmental achievement at a national or international level by an Australian aged between 15 and 25 years

Applications to the Banksia Awards opened in February and close the first week in May. Application forms and guidelines are available at www.banksiafdn.com

The Banksia Awards will take place on Friday 18 July 2008 at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

The Banksia Awards judging panel, comprising of over 80 national judges, includes some of Australia’s best-regarded environmental and corporate social responsibility experts, stakeholders from key government departments and affiliate representatives from a wide range of backgrounds

The Banksia Environmental Foundation is an independent, non-political, non-adversarial and collaborative national organisation that unites Australian businesses, individuals and government to recognise environmental excellence and develop solutions for Australia’s major environmental issues.

 

The Banksia Environmental Award categories are:

Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year: awarded to an Australian individual aged between 15 and 25 years for positive contributions to the environment at a national or international level. This is the first year the award is part of the program

Award Partner: Australian Government – Department of Environment and Water Resources

Origin Energy Gold Banksia Award: the most prestigious of the Banksia Awards presented each year. The recipient is selected from the winners of the Banksia Category Awards and it is awarded to the individual or organisation which, in the judges' opinion, has made the contribution most worthy of extra recognition

2008 Banksia People’s Choice Award: the Australian public is asked to vote on who they see has made an outstanding environmental achievement in this country. This is the second year the award has been part of the program

2008 Banksia International Award: identify and celebrate extraordinary individuals or organisations that have made, or are making a significant contribution to improve our environment on a global level.

Mercedes Benz Australian Environmental Research Award: is a grant of $30,000 to recognise and promote Australian researchers or research programs that have made a significant contribution to understanding or resolving local or global environmental problems

Banksia Built Environment Award: awarded for outstanding achievement in the built environment by incorporating sustainable development principles and practices in buildings, development infrastructure, services, technologies and products

Banksia Climate Award: awarded for outstanding achievement in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and / or adapting to the impacts of climate change

Banksia Community Award: awarded for leadership, commitment and excellence in protecting and enhancing the Australian environment

Banksia Eco Innovation Award: awarded for outstanding projects, practices and programs that result in significant increases in the efficiency of resource consumption and / or significant reduction in waste generation from a life cycle perspective

Banksia Education Award: awarded for outstanding achievement in the development and delivery of educational programs that contribute to the protection, enhancement and sustainability of the Australian environment

Banksia Land and Biodiversity Award: awarded for outstanding achievement in protecting and enhancing land systems, soil and biodiversity in Australia’s terrestrial environments at the species or ecosystem level

Banksia Local Government Award: awarded for outstanding achievement by a local government authority in the development and implementation of environmentally sustainable initiatives

Banksia Sustainability Award: awarded for outstanding achievement in minimising the environmental footprint of the company, institution, organisation, business or government instrumentality

Banksia Water Award: awarded for outstanding achievement in protecting, conserving or enhancing Australia’s water resources including freshwater and marine environments
