Any future increases in electricity bills will have a large impact on South Australian homes. The sun can benefit you by cutting power bills, with the option of battery backup in a power-cut. Chris Hart is the manager of EcoSouth Solar, a South Australian business specialising in solar power.

"Your home or business can benefit from an EcoSouth grid-only solar electricity system. A grid-only system produces power and feeds electricity into the mains power grid. Solar power systems even produce some power on cloudy days. Your bill is reduced by the amount of power you generate."

Solar panels are installed on a north-facing roof of any building (including sheds, grages etc) with best available light, preferably with no overhanging trees or chimneys. The solar panels use light to create power.

Chris explains, "The solar electricity from the panels is used first in your own home to run appliances such as a fridge, electric clocks and a computer. Any power not required to run appliances is fed into the main grid, that is, the powerlines in the street. Your meter is credited with the extra power. The system does not provide power in a blackout as the system cannot drive appliances directly".

As an option, grid systems are available with battery backup. The solar panels grid-feed in normal times, and then feed the batteries to supply the house with mains power in a power-cut.
"What can I do about increasing power prices?" is a question often asked. Chris responds, "Solar electricity offers the benefit of stabilising power prices for your family. Part of your power bill will be reduced as the solar electricity produced each day credits your meter. It's like you have insured yourself against some of the effect of power price rises. The larger your power system, the more you reduce the impact of power price rises, and the less greenhouse gases are produced."

"South Australian home owners can install an EcoSouth solar electricity system and be eligible for a Government rebate of up to $4,000. This rebate is a great opportunity for families or retired couples to become solar powered households, especially if you take advantage of EcoSouth's Christmas offer of special package pricing with stainless steel solar hot water".
