Lower your energy bills and do your bit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by ‘solarising’ your hot water service at home.

In a world-first initiative, Origin is offering Australian households the opportunity to ‘solarise’ their homes by installing solar panels on their roofs to heat water using the power of the sun.

In the process, households will reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and in turn reduce energy bills by using the sun’s energy, instead of electricity or gas, to heat water.

Hot water systems in the home accounts for up to 16
percent of household greenhouse gas emissions – the

second largest source of household emissions after transport. In addition, heating hot water makes up a whopping 25 percent of home energy usage.

Households do not need to replace their existing hot water service in order to ‘solarise’ their homes. It works in three easy steps:

  1. Origin installs one or two solar panels on the roof of the home (depending on the size of current hot water service);
  2. The sun heats up the water in the solar panels which then gets delivered to the existing hot water service;
  3. Instead of using energy to heat up cold water, the existing hot water service is provided with water already heated from the sun.

The energy from the sun is captured through photovoltaic cells (solar panels) that are typically mounted on the side of the roof that has the most exposure to sun.

Dominic Drenen, Origin’s Solar Energy Systems Manager, says this revolutionary initiative provides many benefits to the home.

'There are numerous advantages to harnessing the abundant power of the sun to heat hot water. A solar hot water system can save households up to 60 percent off annual hot water heating
costs because it uses less energy and produces less greenhouse gas emissions. This could mean up to $400 off your bills each year.'

Households can solarise their existing hot water system from as little as $2,395.00 (incl. GST), which includes the Government rebate and full installation by a qualified and approved Origin installer. Once ordered, installation of the panels will only take between four to six hours at a time convenient to the household.

What’s more, solarising existing gas or electric hot water systems won’t change water supply, pressure or temperature.

Origin’s solarised hot water product can be purchased online and includes a 10-year warranty. In addition, households do
not need to be existing Origin customers or switch to Origin to solarise their hot water service.

Origin, Australia’s number one green energy provider and leading supplier of grid connected solar systems has made the choice of switching to solar easy and affordable.

Together we can make a difference.™
