Climate scientists from Macquarie University, the University of Melbourne and Monash University have joined forces and come up with a unique way to raise awareness about climate change and the benefits of moving towards a low carbon future.

The collaborative group, which includes well-known Macquarie climate scientists Professors Tim Flannery, Lesley Hughes and Ann Henderson-Sellers, launched their initiative, a short film competition, Green Screen: Climate Fix Flicks, at Macquarie University yesterday.

They are seeking film submissions of between 30 seconds and five minutes that effectively communicate positive messages about a zero or low carbon, clean energy future. The competition is open to everyone.

Fifteen films will be shortlisted and screened at a public event in Sydney at the time of the Australian Film Festival in March 2012. Entries will be judged by a panel of well-known artists, film-makers and scientists including Kimble Rendall (Matrix and I, Robot) and Professor Tim Flannery (Chair, Climate Change Commission and author of 'Here on Earth' and 'The Weathermakers').

The winning entry in the competition will receive $5000 and up to five films will be awarded 'highly commended' prizes of $500 each. Following the public screening, selected shortlisted films will go into the running for a people's choice award worth $2500.
Participants are encouraged to push their creative boundaries in creating their film entry. The competition is an opportunity to have work seen by high profile film and television professionals as well as audiences around the country.
