Mackay Regional Libraries write the book on recycling

Packaging Stewardship Forum | Australian Food and Grocery Council

binsFunded by the Packaging Stewardship Forum (PSF) of the Australian Food and Grocery Council and Mackay Regional Council, 28 new permanent waste and recycling bin stations have been installed at five (5) Mackay Regional Council library branches - Mackay City, Gordon White, Walkerston, Sarina and Mirani - each carrying the national call to action to recycle, Do The Right Thing, Use the Right Bin.

The new systems will provide away from home recycling opportunities to almost 349,000 people annually and divert up to 2.4 tonnes of aluminium cans, PET and glass bottles from landfill each year - enough to fill 333 household wheelie bins.

Community Services and Facilities portfolio councillor Karen May said Mackay Regional Council has embraced recycling systems at a number of our venues and facilities already including the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre.

"It's important as a community they we are taking the right steps to a brighter and cleaner future not only at home but at public facilities and venues that we visit,' Cr May said.

General Manager of the PSF, Jenny Pickles congratulated Mackay Regional Council on its enthusiasm and commitment to help local residents boost their "away from home" recycling efforts.

"Mackay Regional Council was eager to encourage recycling at and around the regions libraries and we came on board with the expertise on how to do it." Ms Pickles said.

"Through well-placed bin infrastructure and promotion of the Do the Right Thing, Use the Right Bin message, the new systems will make it just as easy to recycle away from home as it is at home."
