Alternative Technology Association (ATA)
The Alternative Technology Association (ATA) has welcomed the carbon tax package announced by the Federal Government, saying a price on carbon was long overdue.
Ian Porter, the ATA’s chief executive officer, said the package was a strong blueprint for moving Australia towards renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The ATA is Australia’s leading not-for-profit consumer-based organization promoting renewable energy, sustainable building and water saving.
“We congratulate the Government, along with the Greens and Independents. It is essential to have a price on the pollution created by industry, and the initiatives announced give an important boost to renewables,” Mr Porter said.
“We are also hopeful that the measures will lead to the closure of polluting brown coal power stations like Hazelwood as soon as possible.”
Mr Porter singled out the new national energy saving initiative and clean energy finance corporation as two of the key improvements.
“Our 5700 members across Australia are at the cutting edge of introducing green technology and practice in their own homes. A price on carbon will mean in the long-term more support for them and their vision of a clean, sustainable economy and community.”
Mr Porter said most Australians would feel little pain in the hip pocket as a result of the carbon tax. Many people were already taking action on climbing energy bills by introducing energy-efficient lighting, appliances and sustainable home design.
“In time people will be asking why we didn’t take such crucial steps as a price on carbon sooner.”
