Great Sandy Biosphere
Great Sandy Biosphere head and Burnett Mary Regional Group Chair, Dr Evelyne Meier said that she was thrilled to hear that the Queensland Government had allocated $65,000 to four pest eradication projects in the Great Sandy Biosphere.
She said, "I was really pleased to hear this morning that the Queensland Government had allocated $65,000 for four significant projects in the Great Sandy Biosphere region, with the $25,000 allocated to eradicate feral pigs in the Great Sandy National Park, the $20,000 for invasive tree management in the Great Sandy National Park, the $10,000 to eradicate the Class 1 pest bitou bush in the Great Sandy National Park and $10,000 for the Sandy Cape Lighthouse pest project on Fraser Island, all vitally important projects within the Great Sandy Biosphere, a world leading area in terms of biodiversity, and an area in which we all have to do what we can to eradicate feral animals, unwanted and non native pests". Dr Meier also said, "I have written to Minister Darling this morning expressing the thanks of the Great Sandy Biosphere and its communities for the support of the Queensland Government through allocating funds to these vital projects." Dr Meier added, "I have also requested a meeting with Minister Darling soon to discuss these projects, the activity of the Great Sandy Biosphere and other areas of mutual interest." Burnett Mary Regional Group, the parent organisation of the Great Sandy Biosphere operates several weed and pest eradication programme throughout the region including in the Great Sandy Biosphere, with weeds and feral animals a significant and increasing problem and threat to native plants and animals throughout the region.
