Looking for a green-career? Melbourne Uni can help you get there

Melbourne University

melb-uniLooking for a green-career?  The Masters of Environment at Melbourne University can help you get there.

At the Office for Environmental Programs we are frequently asked "what sort of job can I get after my study'?

A recent report to the International Labour Organisation notes that there are 'green' skills opportunities in a number of areas in which Australia is well positioned to respond including renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable water systems, biomaterials, green buildings, waste and recycling.  A secondary labour market trend in Australia is the greening of existing jobs in areas such as specialty trades, professional technical and scientific services (law, engineering and accounting, advertising, architecture), crop production and waste management.

Dr Natalie Jamieson, Acting Director notes that these are all areas of study currently available through the Office for Environmental Programs, and indeed sectors in which our graduates work.

Where do our graduates end up?  Many choose Governmental jobs, in roles such as policy advisors, project officers and sustainability officers.  Private industry is also a popular destination, with 23% of graduates choosing jobs with employers such as GHD and NetBalance.  There are International opportunities too, many with NGOs.

Dr Jamieson said that students in the graduate environmental program are seeking real and lasting solutions to environmental problems.

"As our political leaders undertake a largely frustrating debate about climate change and the policy initiatives required to address it, the work we collectively do as environmentally concerned students, teachers and workers in our chosen career is ever more important."

"I like to think we are changing the world one student at a time", Dr Jamieson said.

And many of our graduates are doing just that. Pia Trichel is working as a climate change specialist with UNDP, currently based in New York.

"I work on climate change policy for developing countries, in particular on a project that works with the 26 Least Developed Countries to build their capacity to develop and implement effective national climate change strategies and to take part in and meet their obligations under the international negotiations", Pia said.

Many of our graduates have achieved a complete career change through studying in the program.   Christian Mires who did an undergraduate degree in Law before completing his Masters said "I believe my career has changed 180 degrees thanks to the inspirational lectures I got during my degree."

We are accepting applications now for commencement in Semester 2, 2011.  For information on how to apply and more about the opportunities available through the Graduate Environmental Program and the Master of Environment visit www.environment.unimelb.edu.au or contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
