Get on to the garage sale trail and help keep Australia beautiful
KAB

garage-saleOn Sunday, 10 April 2011, thousands of garage sales will be held in more than 30 local council precincts across Australia as the first national Garage Sale Trail kicks off.  The Garage Sale Trail is community-driven, it reduces waste to landfill and it takes a fun and innovative approach to sustainability.

The award-winning Garage Sale Trail project originated as part of the Bondi Sizzle Community Festival in May 2010 and due to its overwhelming success in 2010, the event goes national this year.

Keep Australia Beautiful is the official charity partner with registered participants being encouraged to donate 10% of their proceeds to the organisation to help fund its environmental programs such as the Australian Sustainable Communities Awards.

The Australian Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, Tony Burke MP, is throwing his weight behind the campaign.

"Keep Australia Beautiful is encouraging you to be part of the Garage Sale Trail and donate some proceeds to them.  It's a great idea and I encourage you to get involved." he said.

Also lending her support to the initiative as a Keep Australia Beautiful Ambassador is talented Melbourne actress and star of Xanadu the Musical, Christie Whelan.

"Garage sales are a fantastic way of finding a new home for your pre-loved goods, which earns you money, saves others from buying new stuff and helps the environment at the same time through recycling.

"They're also fantastic for picking up a bargain or finding that quirky piece of furniture or clothing you might not find in the shops. You can even log onto the Garage Sale Trail website and browse registered sales by postcode or by interest like books, clothes, kids toys or music, which makes your search easy." Whelan added.

To register and be part of the garage sale, or to donate to Keep Australia Beautiful and learn how donations will help local environmental initiatives, go to www.kab.org.au and click on the Garage Sale Trail logo.
