reefThe City of Sydney is taking on the challenge of improving the sustainability of its transport system with the Cycle Strategy and Action Plan that was adopted In April 2007, with a commitment to building a 200 kilometer, safe, convenient and sustainable bike network by 2016.

It is a part of the City's commitment to achieving a sustainable future by making riding a bike an attractive choice of transport, whilst reducing carbon emissions, improving health and reducing car dependence.

REEF Bikes Pty Ltd co-founders George Kazacos and Jovan Vucetic, are supporting the Sydney Transport Plan to build a cycle network by selling quality electric bikes to encourage cycling and help promote eco-friendly commuting.

"We established Reef Bikes with the goal of providing a fun, eco-friendly, zero carbon emission, fast and easy way to commute," says Mr. Vucetic "and with the added power assist, they are more accessible to baby boomers, active adults and those with prior injuries. Reef Bikes hopes to open up the world of cycling and its many health benefits to people who would normally get around just by car."

This ambitious City of Sydney Cycle Strategy and Action Plan can potentially relieve Sydney roads of 300,000 cars, take the pressure off overcrowded public transport and increase the number of bike trips made in the city from 2% to 10% of all trips by 2016. The proposed plan would deliver $506 million in economic benefits to the community over 30 years, $3.88 for every dollar spent.

"Introducing cycle ways makes great economic sense," says Mr. Kazacos. "For every dollar we spend building a bike network we get $4 back in congestion, environmental and health benefits. Currently only about 1 per cent of all trips in the city are by bike. We are hoping that the new cycle ways together with our electric bikes hitting the mainstream market, we can raise this figure to the predicted 10 per cent by 2016."

As Sydney deals with the challenge of improving the sustainability of its transport system, it is also faced with the additional task of catering to the mobility needs of an aging population and baby boomers, many of whom are heavily reliant on cars.

"Our electric bikes can play a vital role in resolving this issue, with their power assist technology, giving older people or those who are less fit the opportunity to use this eco-friendly option, whilst getting the additional power assistance when required," adds Mr. Kazacos. "You can choose whether to pedal normally or to use the motor to make it easier, so it is a great way for people of all fitness levels, ages and abilities to get into biking."

Reef Bikes believes that the major benefits of cost savings, accessibility to the mainstream, reduced traffic congestion, health benefits and zero carbon emissions are hard to beat and are perfectly in line with Sustainable Sydney 2030 Strategy.
