Organic Industry Urges Support of Flood Affected Farmers

Organic Federation of Australia

carrots"The Organic Industry is calling on all Australians to help flood affected rural communities by buying Australian produce" Stated Andre Leu, Chair of the Organic Federation of Australia.

According to organic industry peak body, The Organic Federation of Australia (OFA), it's important to support Australian grown and produced food at this time. "While we see many images of affected people suffering and having to clean out houses, people must remember that these flood waters swept away farms, crops and livestock before they got to the towns", says Miriam Neilson, Secretariat, OFA. "Prior to this disaster, we saw a situation developing with many retailers sourcing cheaper food, including organic food, from overseas. We now call on these retailers to support Australian produce, where possible, in order to enable these farmers to get back on their feet" Miriam stated.

The OFA are also calling on all consumers to buy Australian grown produce and Australian made products, even if they are slightly more expensive. "Farming across Australia employs many people and supports many other industries" Tim Marshall, OFA Deputy Chair said. "Purchasing Australian food will support every Australian in the long run".

Prior to the flood disaster, the Australian Organic Industry had been estimated to be worth close to one billion dollars to the Australian economy. While figures are difficult to obtain at this early stage, many organic farmers have suffered damaged to their operations and will have to undergo additional processes in their clean - up to ensure no contamination has occurred to their businesses.
