Pambula residents asked not to feed wildlife
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS)

rooPambula Beach residents have been asked not to feed the wildlife, particularly kangaroos, following a recent incident in which a domestic dog was attacked by a large kangaroo.

NPWS Area Manager, Stephen Dovey, said today that the influx of visitors to the local caravan park has displaced a large number of kangaroos which have moved into the nearby residential area.

"Some local residents are reported to be feeding the kangaroos and when that happens they lose their fear of people and can become overly familiar and at times aggressive.

"Where ever people feed wildlife we see an increase in reports of wildlife causing problems, whether it be aggressive kangaroos, possums entering homes or birds being an annoyance.

"This sort of behaviour is an inevitable consequence of feeding and our strongest advice is don't feed the wildlife.

"Kangaroos, particularly the larger males, can be dangerous and especially so when they have become used to being fed.

"There have been instances of people being attacked and seriously injured as a direct result of the animals being regularly fed.

"So the message we are trying to get out is that this is a very unwise practice," Mr Dovey said.
