Recycling rescues resources

TEC

cash-for-containersTEC Executive Director, Jeff Angel warned that only half of the 12 billion beverage containers purchased and consumed in Australia each year are making it into a recycling bin.

"Every year at least 6 billion containers go to landfill or litter our parks, roads and waterways," said Mr. Angel.

To demonstrate the waste Bev the Bottle, the mascot for the national push for a Container Deposit System (CDS), is campaigning for dignity in the lives of discarded beverage containers everywhere this week. Bev will join Cleanup Australia's Ian Kiernan, and TEC's Jeff Angel at the Hyde Park Fountain in Hyde Park at 11.30am this Wednesday 3rd November for a chat and photo opp.

"This is an unnecessary and obscene waste of an endlessly recyclable resource. If our environment ministers support a container deposit system we can turn this around. It will increase the recovery of bottles and cans by at least 4 billion (330,000 tonnes of resources) per year and support hundreds of drop-off centres for other waste like electronic items and batteries," said Mr. Angel.

"We will be urging all Australians to support Bev's brave efforts, inviting the general public to join the campaign and sign the online letter to the Minister for the Environment at www.boomerangalliance.org.au or www.tec.org.au."

The progress of the Cash for Containers campaign can also be tracked on Bev's Facebook page.
