waterMirroring the critical situation in our rivers, Australia's underground water supplies face major challenges, including drought, climate change, over-extraction and increased competition for the remaining resources.

The nation's leading groundwater scientists, water managers and planners will meet in Canberra in the first national summit on this overlooked issue, to discuss challenges, threats, opportunities and policy solutions for one of our most vital resources.

Groundwater 2010 - The Challenge of Sustainable Management will be held at the National Convention Centre in Canberra from October 31 to November 4, 2010.

Organised by the Geological Society of Australia (GSA) in conjunction with the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH), the conference highlights include:
  • The state of the nation's groundwater reserves
  • The need for national policy action on groundwater
  • Groundwater planning under the Murray Darling Basin plan
  • Competition between farming and mining & energy over groundwater
  • The social, environmental and economic impact of extracting fossil groundwater
  • Managing salt in groundwater in the Victorian Mallee
  • How rising sea-levels will affect coastal aquifers
