Australian Wildlife icon Malcolm Douglas dies

Save Fraser Island Dingoes Inc (SFID)

Malcolm-Douglas-dingo-for-SFID1The shock news that Australian Wildlife icon Malcolm Douglas died last week came as a terrible and sad loss to everyone, especially his wife Valerie, and family.

Australians followed Malcolm's many adventures spanning almost half a century, across the wild frontiers of our rugged land.

He brought an outstanding array of documentaries to the Australian audience, showcasing the amazing wealth of beauty which our country holds both on land and in the water.  He was a keen fisherman, loved to cook, was a very skilled bushman and had a deep connection with the Aboriginal people.

Malcolm developed a research centre, wildlife park and animal refuge sixteen kilometres from Broome, Western Australia in 1983. He caught crocodiles that had caused disturbance amidst outback communities and relocated them to safety in his park. Malcolm was hoping to one day acquire a breeding pair of Fraser Island dingoes for his Park.

He was a true Australian Icon. His legacy will live on through his family, his top-rating documentaries and inspiring conservation work.

Perhaps one of his last gestures was to put some footage together for the Save Fraser Island Dingoes Inc (SFID) Charity Dingo Dinner in Hervey Bay September 4, in support of our campaign to preserve purest strain of dingo in Australia.

Sadly, we did not receive the footage in time to play it at our dinner, and some of us only saw it once he had died.

He was very passionate about dingoes and says on the footage: "Dingoes are beautiful animals and are always smoochy.  I have eight dingoes here; the only type I don't have is the Fraser Island type.

'Sorry I couldn't come and see you on your night.  I'm sure in years to come the dingoes will remain on Fraser Island, and hopeful one day I will get the Fraser Island type dingoes here at my wilderness park. Have a good night and keep up the good fight! And don't take notice of negative reactions from government departments!'

The footage from Malcolm Douglas is awesome and is so very precious. This footage was taken one morning after a trip to hospital which demonstrates Malcolm's ongoing passion to support the dingoes, and his willingness, despite being unwell, to help preserve Australian wildlife.

SFID would like to convey our deepest heartfelt condolences to the family of this amazing man. The value of his work is immeasurable  and we thank him for the historical records he produced which will forever illustrate a way of life that no longer exists. He leaves behind a precious legacy for us which will ultimately benefit all wildlife throughout Australia.
