Brisbane Entertainment Centre

PSF-Laucnh-at-BEC-17-Sept-2010-1As the summer season of events kicked off at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, all patrons should know they are helping the environment and contributing to the new recycling system that has recently been installed.

The Brisbane Entertainment Centre - Queensland's premier entertainment and meeting facility, today launched its new recycling bin systems established for the general public and "back of house".

Funded by the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Australian Food and Grocery Council's Packaging Stewardship Forum (PSF) and the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM), 18 dual station waste and recycling bins were installed in the Courtyard and Balconies.

To assist with the recycling initiative, Wanless Wastecorp provided a custom built 15 metre recycling station to handle the large number of beverage containers consumed at the Centre. Behind the scenes, venue manager AEG Ogden have worked actively with cleaning staff to embrace the new recycling systems.

The new systems will recycle around 15 tonnes of PET bottles, glass and aluminium cans from Brisbane Entertainment Centre annually, equivalent to 625,000 bottles - enough to stretch end to end from Brisbane's CBD to the airport.

General Manager of the PSF Jenny Pickles said the aim of the program was to get people recycling just as effectively when they are away-from-home as they do when they're at home using their kerbside collection systems.

"Through well-placed infrastructure, good promotion and a clear message of Do the Right Thing Use the Right Bin we have shown we can deliver effective away from home recycling systems in public places, with minimal contamination," Ms Pickles said.

The Brisbane Entertainment Centre is one of 14 well-known entertainment venues participating in the PSF's away from home recycling program, with installations already completed at other Queensland venues (some in partnership with DERM). These venues are WetNWild Waterworld, Movie World, Dreamworld, Seaworld and Currumbin Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary, Dairy Farmers Stadium, Skilled Park Stadium, The Gabba, Suncorp Stadium, Ballymore Stadium, Cairns Convention Centre, Gold Coast Convention Centre and the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
