Help replace Australia's dirtiest power station with clean energy by 2012.

A bulletin from Victoria McKenzie-McHarg, on behalf of the Safe Climate Team, Environment Victoria

hazelwoodOver the last month we've met with state and federal MPs who want to know the detail about our plan to Replace Hazelwood. We've had thousands of visitors to the Replace Hazelwood website, and over 40,000 people a day have seen our billboard on Hoddle St. Community groups have been doorknocking across inner Melbourne, and our regional friends have rallied in Ballarat and are pushing for local support in the north east. Almost 1,700 people have watched our campaign clip on youtube, and on the weekend, hundreds of Labor party members and delegates heard our call to Replace Hazelwood at the State Labor Party Conference.

Our politicians are starting to listen, but now, we need to make them act.

National Day of Action to Replace Hazelwood - Sat, 17 July

To Replace Hazelwood, we need both the federal and the state government committing to action, and we really need your help to bring this campaign onto the national agenda.

On Saturday, July 17 we're asking you to join with us in community actions across Australia calling on Kevin Rudd to make a commitment to Replace Hazelwood with clean energy by 2012.

Climate groups and community groups, church groups, school groups, local sporting clubs and even mothers groups will be getting together to help us make this national call for action.

If you are involved in a group, there are lots of ways that you can get involved. You could:
· Hold a local vigil
· Rally outside your Federal MP's office
· Hold a local stall
· Go door-knocking
· Host a Replace Hazelwood themed event in your local park

Even better, get creative and come up with your own idea of how to call on the government to Replace Hazelwood. One group of mothers and kids in Melbourne are making a giant Dinosaur named Hazel who will be visiting their local MP on the 17th. Another community group in Wodonga will be selling slices of a huge Hazelwood cake, asking everyone who comes by to be a part of getting rid of ‘Hazelwood'. The more creative you can be, the better!

But it's not just for Victorians. There are actions already planed in Western Australia, Tasmania, Darwin and across New South Wales, and we hope all Australians who want a clean energy future can get involved.

We'll gather pictures of the actions online, and send them to politicians across the country. We can also help your group get local media coverage of your action so that the rest of your community can get in on it too.

If you're not involved in a group, why not join together with family and friends? You don't need to do anything huge. A picture of you all holding a Replace Hazelwood sign beside a local landmark would be enough to show that you want the Federal Government to act.

To register your action, send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with your name and a brief description of your action.

Even small actions together can add up to a lot. If you're worried about what you can do with limited time and resources, get in touch - we've got plenty more ideas.

Replace Hazelwood billboard comes to Lygon St.

The next in our series of billboards across Melbourne for the Replace Hazelwood campaign is launching this week on the corner of Lygon St and Brunswick Rd in North Carlton.

Our first billboard has been on Hoddle St in Clifton Hill for the past month, and boy has it got the locals talking. We've received a fantastic response from the community with emails and phone calls of support.

Check out our youtube clip of the billboard here...
