Best of Green down under - Australia leads in environmental design

Sanctuary magazine

Michael_VerityAustralia has been acclaimed at the forefront of environmental design after the announcement of two awards from leading global sustainability website Treehugger.com.

Sanctuary, a quarterly magazine which profiles Australia's leading environmental homes, won Best Shelter Magazine in Treehugger's Best of Green 2010 awards.

Andrew Maynard was named Best Young Architect for his innovative and humorous environmental house designs and projects.

"These awards, from the world's leading environmental website, recognise Australia's position at the cutting edge of sustainable design," said Sanctuary co-editor Verity Campbell.

"It is due recognition for all the great architects and designers whose work we have profiled in Sanctuary magazine."

Treehugger described Sanctuary as "a mag with a mission ... with the mandate to make sustainability sexy, and it succeeds - modern design never looked so good and worked so well."

Andrew Maynard was praised by Treehugger for his conceptual work: "He understands that saving what we have is greener than starting from scratch, and that sustainable design cannot be bolted on."

Sanctuary is published by the Alternative Technology Association, Australia's largest member-based not-for-profit organisation promoting sustainable building design, water conservation and energy efficiency in the home.
