Native falcon destroyed after unlicensed rescue attempt

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS)

falconThe NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) reminds the public that only licensed carers may tend injured native Australian wildlife after a falcon had to be euthanased near Nowra.

NPWS South Coast Region Advisory Committee member and veterinarian Justin Clarke says the falcon was brought to him with poorly healed wounds after being kindly but ineffectively nursed for more than three weeks.

"The falcon had a beak injury and a broken wing, both of which may have responded to treatment if the animal had been seen by a veterinarian sooner.

"Members of the public have good intentions, but only people licensed by NPWS should care for sick and injured native animals," Mr Clarke said.

NPWS Manager of Wildlife Licensing Ron Haering says licensed native animal carers receive training and guidance and meet strict conditions for animal welfare.

"Members of the public who are interested in caring for native animals can join their local native animal rehabilitation group, where they will receive necessary training and guidance.

"The location of each group and their contact details are provided on our website or people can ring 1300 361 967.

"Wildlife carers operate under strict licence conditions and must abide by a code of practice.

"Birds of prey and owls may only be cared for by specialist carers as they require extensive experience and specialist facilities," Mr Haering said.

On the South Coast, call Wildlife Rescue South Coast on 0418 427 214 or NPWS on 4423 2170 if you find an injured or distressed native animal.
