Sustainable Living Festival

Too big to ignore, it weighs in at a staggering 597 million tonnes*, and it's growing by the day. That’s the annual carbon emission Australians release into the atmosphere each year.

There are tonnes of great reasons to look the climate elephant in the eye, and join thousands of Australians who are leading the charge on restoring a safe climate future at the Sustainable Living Festival.

The Sustainable Living Festival is the largest event of its kind in Australia, and it’s free. The
2009 Festival attracted over 124,000 visits.

In its eleventh year, the Festival is getting even bigger! In the two weeks leading up to the
three-day Main Event at Federation Square individuals and communities across Australia will be hosting their own sustainability events, extending the reach of the sustainability message even further.

Luke Taylor, Sustainable Living Festival Director says; “This year’s Festival offers the opportunity to get the elephant moving, with the big solutions to the big problems in the room.

“The 2010 program has broken the mould of the past 10 years, expanded the opportunity for individuals to get active, get connected and celebrate.”

The main event at Federation Square will showcase a huge range of exhibitors, talks, workshops, art, films and performances celebrating and inspiring sustainable communities.

The Festival provides opportunities to learn new sustainable skills and indulge the senses. Make sustainable fashion with The Social Studio, participate in a garden drought-proofing workshop with the Very Edible Garden crew, taste sustainable goodies from our organic chefs or wine with Max Allen, dance at the Songlines World Music Corroboree, or join in a circus, worm farming or dance workshop with the kids.

The Festival Talk Program will include Peter Singer - Climate Change as an Ethical Issue,
Prof. Charlie Veron - The Great Barrier Reef on Death Row, Tim Costello – Climate Change
Impacts on the World’s Poor, a live cross to Mark Jacobson, Stanford University – Shifting the Entire World to 100% Renewable Energy by 2030, special guests from North East Arnhem Land and much more.


Visitors can explore over 150 providers of sustainable products and services through the Festival Exhibitor Expo. Take home information about sustainable building, green cleaning, environmental education, solar power, greywater systems, water tanks, ethical food, community groups…the list goes on.
