National E-Waste Briefing

As smaller and more advanced electronics pour into the market place, an avalanche of outdated equipment heads for to our landfills.

In 2007-08 16.8 million TVs, computers and related products reached their end of useful lives Australia, of which 84% ended up in our landfills. It’s estimated that in 2028 a staggering 44 million computers and TVs will reach their end of life.

To address this escalating issue, Federal Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, has released a new National Waste Policy which will put computers and TVs at the forefront of recycling initiatives backed by new legislation.

With the national framework currently being drafted, IIR Conferences’ is set to bring together key stakeholders in e-waste management to discuss the issues at hand at its National E-Waste Briefing to be convened in Sydney, 29 April.

The one-day briefing will give participants the opportunity to hear about the future of e-waste management in Australia from all angles of the debate – local and state governments, key e-waste recyclers and major manufacturers of computers and TV’s.

The programme also features a keynote international address from Andreas Röthlisberger from Europe’s WEEE Forum (European Association of Electrical and Electronic Waste Take Back Systems). The Forum is an association of 40 open collection and recovery systems for e-waste in Europe. Mr. Röthlisberger will be addressing the delegation on how to leverage Europe’s experience to gain the best possible outcomes for the Australian market.

Other speakers featured on the programme include Mr Ian Birks, CEO Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA), Jan Van Degraaff, Project Manager Sustainability Victoria, Kumar Radhakrishnan, Senior Vice President Sims Recycling Solutions and Michael Channell, Environmental Manger IBM Australia.
