Safe Climate Australia
With their pedometres clicking over to more than 4000km, Victorian emergency service workers will today step foot back on home soil on their super- marathon from Cooktown to Melbourne. Earlier, the Run for a Safe Climate began as a 6000km RUN to raise money for, and awareness of, climate change. The final leg held on November 29th, was celebrated with a community fun run and event at the St Kilda baths.
The twenty- five strong team; fire- fighters, nurses, paramedics and police; have been on the frontline of some of Victoria's worst climate-related disasters, including Black Saturday. They know all too well the devastating impacts that global warming can have on Australia's economy, communities and industries. Now, they are taking action. Now, they say, it's time to convert Australia to a safe level of carbon emmissions.
In partnership with NAB, the Run for a Safe Climate is raising money for the Safe Climate Transition Plan; a plan to ensure the safety of Australians both present and future.
Emergency services volunteer runners; police, fire- fighters, paramedics and nurses; are available for pictures and interviews about the Run - why they are participating, what they hope to achieve and the issue of climate change.
The Run passed through some of Australia's major ecosystems and agricultural areas at risk from global warming, including the Great Barrier Reef, the Alpine region and the Murray Darling. It will continue through to Adelaide, then the Great Ocean Road and fire- affected communities in Victoria's north- east before the final Run to St Kilda Beach on November 29th.
Safe Climate Australia is a non-profit, non-partisan organisation formed by concerned climate scientists, and community and business leaders with a shared understanding of the need for emergency action to restore a safe climate.
